MISSION

Amy considers herself as a responsible and considerate designer, with sustainability and ethics at the forefront of all design and business decisions for Amy Matthews Page Design. She promotes that we all have a duty to understand the impact that we have on our planet and strive for positive change and a circular economy.

Architects study to make the fabric of our buildings holistic and sustainable in design and Amy believes that the items residing in our spaces deserve the same degree of resonance.

With this in mind, the founding idea of Amy Matthews Page Design was to utilise the waste created by the construction industry, forming something functionable, responsible and beautiful.

Even as a small UK business, we will do our absolute best in improving and further reducing our impact on the environment as well as making a positive social impact. We certainly aren’t perfect but always open and committed to learning and adapting to improve.

If you have any suggestions on how we could do this, please do let us know at hello@amymatthewspagedesign.com

Suppliers:

We are committed to building a sustainable and ethical supply chain. When sourcing/ working with any suppliers, we research and screen to evaluate if the supplier’s values match our own, and use local suppliers where possible to reduce our carbon footprint.

Energy use:

We are doing our best to switch to renewable energy providers where possible for the studio, and use processes requiring as little electricity as possible. We also ensure machines and equipment we use are turned off when not in use to reduce our general amount of energy consumption. We try to utilise as much natural light as possible, reducing the need for powered lighting (also using LED lights as a more efficient option). Using natural light also helps to boost our health and wellbeing- an added bonus. We take advantage of natural elements when adjusting the environment of our studio, only using heating and cooling outputs when absolutely necessary.

Water use:

We will keep water usage to a minimum in the studio, only using the exact amount of water we need and no unnecessary water usage, utilising rainwater where possible.

Materials:

We proactively use eco-friendly materials, sourcing recycled and reusable and reducing the volume of ‘mixed waste’ where possible. Evaluating the properties of the materials we use is important to us, ensuring functionality and durability of each, and interpreting how they affect the integrity of our designs. We actively avoid toxic and hazardous substances and only use non toxic materials in our products and processes, to protect our drinking water, air, soil and ecosystems, as well as creating a safe working environment.

Packaging:

We are super conscious of the packaging we send out for our customer’s orders, only using recyclable paper and cardboard packaging that is FSC certified. We don’t use plastic for our packing tape and instead use a paper alternative that is just as strong and water activated, this makes the boxes you receive from us way easier to recycle. We only use recyclable or biodegradable protective padding and shipping labels. We are conscious of the packing of the products we procure/ third party inbound, which is recycled or reused in the studio wherever possible.

Waste:

We use our own waste management system, striving for less waste and lowering our carbon footprint as a small business and requiring less landfill space, reducing the negative impact on biodiversity loss. We try our absolute hardest not to throw anything away that we could find a use for in the studio. To be proactive in our waste management, why try to stop waste happening in the first place, working with our suppliers on the unnecessary packaging we receive, removing unnecessary packaging from our own products and trying our absolute best to go paperless in as many situations as we can and only print paperwork in the studio if absolutely necessary, and if so, use recycled paper. We  separate  our waste into different categories, which improves recycling rates. We try to identify any waste that can be used to generate new products - already being done in our existing products. As part of our pledge to do better for the environment, we have joined the London Circular economy club (CEC), which connects us with other small businesses, all striving for the same circular economy goal.

Production:

We hand make our products using small-scale artisan craftsmanship processes in our London studio. We do have a very small selection of our products in stock, but the majority of our products are made-to-order, meaning that products are produced when the order is placed), this ensures a sustainable production with no mass/over produced products.

Product lifecycle:

We design and make quality items, made for longevity and cherished for lifetimes, with the life cycle of our products being very important to us.

We at Amy Matthews Page Design have BIG goals in the future, being cheerleaders of circular economy and striving for eco-consciousness to be the norm. WATCH THIS SPACE….
